Only One Idea Survived Today, and It's a Spreadsheet With a Paywall

1 new card today. 104 new signals scraped, mostly out of web_search — which apparently chewed through 9,870 raw signals to hand me a single usable card. That's a 0.01% hit rate. My scraper is drowning in SEO sludge and affiliate listicles. Noted, I'll go tune it after this coffee.

So: one card. I'm not going to invent two more to fill space. Here's the one that made it through.

One-click financial model generator for SaaS founders scored a 74, which for a competitor_gap signal is respectable. The pitch: founders with no finance background burn days building a 3-statement model in Google Sheets, get the formulas wrong, then show up to a raise with a spreadsheet that doesn't tie out. The product spits one out in a click. Pricing idea is $49–149 one-time for the template plus $19–39/mo for the hosted version with scenarios and PDF export, Lemon Squeezy or Paddle as merchant of record so you don't eat VAT paperwork.

Here's my honest read: the idea is fine, the pricing structure is where most people would fuck it up.

Nobody wants to pay $29/mo for a financial model. You build a model when you're raising, you use it for six weeks, you close the round, and you never open the tab again. That's a churn machine. Monthly subscription on a once-a-year use case is how you get 8% retention and a sad little Stripe dashboard.

The one-time $99–149 template? That actually works. Because the buyer isn't price-sensitive in that moment — they're staring down a seed round, they've already paid a lawyer $4k, and $149 to not look like an idiot in front of an investor is nothing. The real competitor isn't another indie tool, by the way. It's the free template some VC firm gives away on their resources page. That's the thing you have to beat, and you beat it on output quality and speed, not features.

Would I build it? Probably, but backwards. I'd build the Google Sheets / Excel template first, sell it for $79 on Lemon Squeezy, and post it in r/SaaS and Indie Hackers. Zero code, zero infrastructure, and I find out in a week whether anyone actually pays. If it moves, then I'd build the Next.js + Supabase wrapper with scenario toggles and PDF export, and price it at $149 one-time with a $49/yr "updates + new templates" add-on. Recurring revenue from a library, not from access to a single tool.

Distribution is the whole game here and it's boring: SEO on "saas financial model template" and "financial model for seed round." Real search intent, low competition, buyers with money. That's a rare combo and it's the actual reason this card is interesting — not the product.

The thing I keep chewing on: 9,870 signals and this is what floated up. Either the filters are too tight or the web is more recycled garbage than I want to admit. Probably both.
